Playing on your phone — touch controls and tips

By Jay ·

The game is a portrait 9:16 canvas, which means your phone is arguably its native home — no download, no landscape wrestling, runs in Safari or Chrome. But touch changes how the three phases play, and a couple of habits separate a smooth mobile run from a frustrating one.

Steering: drag low, think in lanes

Your hook follows your finger's horizontal position — you don't need to touch the hook itself. Keep your thumb in the bottom third of the screen, off to whichever side feels natural, and slide left–right from there. Your hand never covers the fish you're trying to dodge, and the hook's steering (which has a top speed — it glides rather than teleports) feels more predictable with slow, deliberate slides than with flicks.

On the dive, commit to lanes early. Touch steering is slightly slower to correct than a mouse, so the mouse player's habit of threading last-second gaps costs you here: pick the wider gap a beat earlier instead.

Shooting: ambush, don't chase

In the air phase, fish arc and fall fast, and chasing them with your thumb means your hand is covering the screen exactly where you need to see. Instead: during the slow-motion moment as the chain leaves the water, pick a spot where fish will fall through, park your thumb nearby, and tap as they arrive. Let the fish come to the finger.

Never double-tap. A second tap that lands after the fish is gone counts as a miss, and a miss resets your combo multiplier to zero. One deliberate tap per target.

Buy the shotgun earlier than a mouse player would

The pistol's hit radius is 40 px — thinner than a fingertip on most phones. The shotgun's is 70 px with three pellets, which is the difference between "I have to be exact" and "close counts". If you play mostly on your phone, the standard upgrade order has an official exception for you: take the shotgun before the 80 m line. Your conversion rate is the bottleneck, not your ceiling.

The quiet-commute setup

If it feels laggy

The game is light (about 300 KB), but a phone browser with thirty open tabs can still stutter, and stutter hurts the air phase most — your taps land where a fish was. Close spare tabs, or reload the page; there is no server connection to lose. If you're deciding between playing here or on a PC, the honest comparison is in browser version vs the Steam game.
